What is THE BEST form of exercise?

Fitness trainers get asked these types of questions all of the time: “What is the best type of exercise for weight loss?” “What exercises burn the most calories?” “What exercises should I be doing more of to see results?” You can find all kinds of articles that include all kinds of statistics comparing the “buzzword” workouts like CrossFit, HIIT, Tabata, SoulCycle and Zumba.

You could probably spend at least 3 full days sorting through all of these articles and still not feel confident in having identified “THE BEST” one. Guess what we have to say? It’s simple. The best workout is the one you enjoy.

“Wait… What? Huh? How does that work?” Just a little logic. If someone says to you, for instance, “SoulCycle, that’s where it’s at!”, and you cannot stand the idea of anything that includes pedaling a bike that doesn’t actually go anywhere, guess how many calories that workout burns… Zero, zilch, nada, goose egg – because you simply will not adhere to a program that you don’t enjoy.

This is where Thank Dog! Bootcamp appeals to people who don’t usually enjoy exercise of any kind. The reasons are many; they feel good about doing something for their dog, they see the benefits of the exercise and obedience training for the dog even away from bootcamp, they actually have a good time and sometimes even forget that they are exercising because they’ve got their best friend by their side the entire time and they become part of a like-minded community that can be hard to find in this big world of ours. Avid exercisers, non-exercisers and all those in between agree, there aren’t many forms of butt-kicking exercise that are more enjoyable than Thank Dog! Bootcamp.

TODD COLLINS

I have been a certified personal trainer for nearly 10 years. I have studied several Martial Art disciplines over the past 15 years. I have trained professional full contact fighters, law enforcement officers, and firemen. So, when Jill asked me to be an instructor for Thankdog Bootcamp I knew that I had to experience the workout for myself. Let’s just say that I grossly underestimated the intensity of the workout. I expected a good run with my dog at best. This was no joke! Each day of the week focused on a different muscle group to keep the muscles balanced and the workouts progressive. The cardio workouts are specifically designed to increase speed, agility, and stamina. However, it was having my dog with me that inspired me the most, and reminded me that this is more than just exercise. It’s an opportunity for me to tell my dog, “thanks”. As someone who has experienced Thankdog Bootcamp from both sides I can confidently say that it is one of the most effective, fulfilling, and revolutionary workout programs around.

Hi Jill,
I wanted to tell you how much I’m loving my morning workouts with TDBC.  When I first started almost 2 years ago I thought it might be a bit of fun with my dog and a chance to be out in the park in the mornings.  Now I realize the workout is the main focus, and even though I complain about being sore and sweating too much, I know that this is what I really need.  I thought I would continue to go to the gym after work but now I see that not only is that not needed, but I couldn’t do it because you’re working my butt off in the mornings!   I’ve now let my gym membership lapse and the thought of having to go to the gym and run on a treadmill indoors like a hamster makes me cringe.  It’s so much more fun being out in the park with you guys and the dogs.

Before I started TDBC I tried two other morning boot camps. I found them to be a bit boring and pretty much the same every week.  You have this great ability to change it up and even after nearly 2 years we’re doing different things all the time. (and yes, getting different muscles sore every week)  I know that people tend to want to talk about the dog part of the workouts, and of course that’s where the real fun is, but I think the people workouts are really superior to anything I’ve done.  The dog aspect makes the hour go fast and my dog makes me get up and do it, so I guess you’ve figured out a terrific way to combine the two for a great workout!

KEN & MYRNA
I started attending Thank Dog! Bootcamp because my girlfriend found them on Craigslist and wanted to try it as we had just brought our new puppy, Myrna, home.

I didn’t really know what to expect, but 2 years later, I’m still attending and don’t know what to expect!

Everyday I get an asskicking and the routines are never the same. Not only am I gaining muscle (my body has changed tremendously since we’ve started), but Myrna gets a workout and trained which is super convenient since we work all day.

This is truly an awesome program…worth every cent.

MATT & HURRICANE

I first heard of Thank Dog Bootcamp a year ago from my girlfriend when we adopted our little tornado of a terrier, Hurricane. “Absolutely not,” was my first, second, and final reaction. There’s no way it could possibly be a good workout, and it’s silly to run around and “exercise” with your dog.Nine months and one nipped-at delivery man later, we came across Thank Dog Bootcamp. Hurricane was living up to his name and needed some obedience. I swallowed my pride, woke up at the crack of dawn, and headed to Burbank.Let me tell you … this ain’t no bullshit.I thought I would miss my gym membership while I worked out the pup for a few weeks; now I can’t imagine going back. It’s a rocking workout that still kicks my ass after all this time. The routine and exercises are always switched up so nothing is ever predictable or boring. The program works for anyone at any fitness level; beginners can use light weights and jog/walk and those ready for something more strenuous can snag their heavy weights and really tear it up when running. You really need to experience it to believe it, but you better believe it.

THOMAS & OWEN

When my wife first described Thank Dog Boot Camp to me, it sounded like a good way to train our young Border Collie mix. I never really thought of it as a way to exercise. After a few weeks, my wife was constantly talking about how sore she was and what a great workout she was getting! One night she encouraged me to check it out, and although skeptical and hesitant I agreed. My first class I was really blown away at how intense the workouts were! I have a background in playing full contact football that required grueling weight training and cardio. I can easily say that this has been some of the best exercise I have gotten since my football days. Yes Thank Dog Boot Camp is a great way to get some behavior training for your pup. But more importantly, it’s a GREAT way to get a serious workout in at the same time! I used to dread dragging myself to the gym because of how boring it became and brain numbingly repetitive it would feel. Thank Dog Boot Camp keeps everything fresh and new, for me and my dog!

Mygirlfriend and I only have one dog so I didn’t really give thought to joining this program. She has been coming every morning, 5 days a week for more than 2 years (she was one of the first to ever join TDBC).

My workouts in the morning are really important to me, and I didn’t know if TDBC would give me the kind of muscle-toning exercise I get at the gym. I also wasn’t sure if working out with someone else’s dog would be fun.  Both wrong – the workout is super-challenging and Quinn is amazing (she keeps me on my toes).  I start the day feeling great and in top form.  Thank Dog kicks ass.
